Meghna Bridge / Japan Bangladesh Friendship Bridge
Meghna bridge is a road bridge in Bangladesh. The official name of this bridge is Japan Bangladesh Friendship Bridge, but it is popularly known as Meghna Bridge. It was constructed over the Meghna river, which is one of the major rivers in the country. The bridge was opened on February 1, 1991. The bridge is located along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. The total length of the bridge is 900 metres and width is 9.2 metres. The bridge has thirteen spans. Meghna bridge was built with the financial help from the Government of Japan. It was constructed by the Nippon Koei Co. Ltd. which is an independent consulting firm in Japan. A total of $7.9 billion was spent on the construction of the bridge. Meghna bridge is the single largest project with Japanese assistance in the world.
